Advanced Safety Coach

Development Course

Accredited through the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM)

ILM City & Guilds Award in Coaching in the Workplace – Level 3 For First Line Managers, Supervisors, and Team Leaders

OVERVIEW

This course is designed as an advanced further development programme to follow on from the Mindsafety ISCA Foundation Safety Coach course.

This course drills into the essence of safety coaching within the workplace, and centers around developing the role of the coach with a combination of work place assignments and workshop activities, which are measured against an external qualification framework.

The programme is designed over a four-month period, which includes an induction day, and three tutor led workshop sessions, each lasting two days.

The workshops will focus on review of work place assignments, designing campaign strategies, goal setting, measurement of data and analysis, and honing skills in communication and leadership.

The qualification awarded at the end of the programme is externally accredited through the City and Guilds ILM qualification framework, and is mapped as credits towards further study, including ‘A’ and Degree level qualifications.

ILM qualifications are made up of units, each of which focuses on a specific aspect of the role for which the qualification is designed. Some units are mandatory, others are optional.

Each Unit has a credit value. Credit means that once you have completed a Unit successfully, even if you can’t complete the whole qualification for some reason, you can still have your achievement recorded – you will officially be awarded and recognized for the credits you have achieved.

The amount of credit is defined by the credit value, and one credit is equal to approximately ten hours of ‘notional learning time’. In other words, it is assumed that you will have taken about ten hours work to be awarded that one credit.

The work isn’t just time spent in a classroom or workshop, it also includes time spent reading and practicing skills on your own, working towards goals at work and other vocational activities, working with teams, as well as discussing what you are learning with managers and work colleagues, and anything you do in preparation for and completion of assessment.

Each unit also has a level. The level determines the complexity of the assignments and their application.

Learning and Improving your Performance

One of the most important features of ILM units is that they are designed to enable the delegate to learn how to perform more effectively in their role as a coach, and also help them demonstrate their improved performance.

It’s not enough just to know how to be better at their job; they need to show that they are using what they have learnt.

One way of understanding how this works is the Experiential Learning Cycle, developed by the psychologist David Kolb.

He suggests that the most effective learning occurs if people work their way through a cycle, from learning about the theory (which Kolb called Abstract Conceptualisation), then through planning how to apply what you have learnt (Active Experimentation), then trying it out (Experience), and finally thinking about the experience and what you have learnt from it (Critical Reflection).

Delivery of the programme

The delivery of the programme will be by using a blended method of learning, which will involve workshops, tutorials and distance learning which will be mainly work place assignments, reading and reflection.

Assessment Strategy

All assessment methodologies are work related and designed to provide individual development and/or direct organisational benefits. Achievement of a qualification is dependent on the completion of the mandatory unit assessment set by ILM.

All mandatory units from one qualification, in the same suite, are imbedded in another, thus there is no repeat assessment if candidates have already completed the assessment on another course. For mandatory unit assessments candidates must achieve the minimum number of marks outlined for each section and a total of at least 50 marks for success in each assessment for the mandatory units.

All work should be done electronically as ILM is moving toward the process of external verification via electronic format. Only MS word (.doc) or rich text format (.rtf) file formats will be accepted, with a maximum file size of 1 Mb.

The course is client or project specific, - exclusive; - with assignments tailored to the working environment the coach will be working within. Mixing delegates from different work sectors would impact on the outcomes, and will therefore not be an option with this course.

Clients may include members of their supply chain when determining who would benefit from the course.

Joining Instructions

Delegates will be required to complete an official Registration Form as part of the enrolment procedures for the course, and which forms an integral part of the Joining Instructions process.

Mutually agreed dates and times will then be confirmed, and the Joining Instructions process will be finalized.
