About Mindsafety

Mindsafety was conceived after some major failures in safety pointed to human behaviours as the cause behind the outcomes. It was realized then that safety was a combination of two elements: Systems and People. People create the culture within any work environment, and despite having all the systems available in place, it is the workplace culture which drives behaviours.

The MindSafety behavioural training programme is a unique and original system of changing beliefs and perceptions about safety, influencing the very culture of the organisation. We aim to build a pro-active behavioural safety 'cushion' below the 'Zero Accidents' level using interactive sessions, inspirational events & specialist safety coaching.

We have a dedicated team of presenters, trainers, and advanced Safety Coaches led by Eddie Woods, who specialise in the delivery of the MindSafety culture change programme.

Through dynamic presentations and inter-active workshops, we address the core issues pertinent to making real differences within behavioural safety. By influencing and changing beliefs, positive behaviours are embedded into the very culture of the organisation, creating a continuous cycle of improvements which extends into the long term. Mindsafety provides the knowledge to engage and influence everyone within the organisation, covering topics including:

  • LEARNING STYLES

  • CONSCIOUS OVERLOAD ( 7 +/- 2 )

  • THE SCIENCE OF THE MIND

  • LEADERSHIP VISIBILITY

  • CULTURE AND BELIEFS

  • THE POWER OF CALIBRATION

  • HOW WE STORE AND RETRIEVE INFORMATION

  • MAKING AND BREAKING HABITS

  • ‘ALPHA’ STATES & LEVELS OF CONSCIOUSNESS

  • CREATING A REMINDER CULTURE

  • TIME –v- RISK

  • MOTIVATION TECHNIQUES

  • COMMUNICATION SKILLS & POSITIVE INFLUENCES

Learning is not limited to classrooms or training events and seminars, as most safety standards are informally learnt, from person to person. Starting a new job, we look for clues to guide our future behaviour suitable for that climate. What we see, hear and feel helps us to informally learn from those we come into contact with most frequently.

Through repeated reinforcement, tasks and actions we undertake become controlled & co-ordinated by our sub-conscious minds, leaving our conscious minds free to wonder. We all have these built in automatics. Once we understand how unconscious routines and conditioning work together we are closer to exposing the building blocks of those unexplainable accidents. Could a portion of accidents be blamed on mind and body in two different places? Meaning your body can be in one location carrying out a task, and your mind in a completely different location.

PRACTICE DOES NOT MAKE PERFECT – IT MAKES HABIT

Habits we have formed over the years can be time wasting, unhealthy, obnoxious, boring or outright dangerous. They can limit our effectiveness, stunt our personal growth, determine our immediate safety and dissipate energy. Or they can be constructive, positive, healthy, and desirable. They can save time, relieve tension, increase our effectiveness and keep us safe. It is important we learn how to move away from bad habits and create good ones.

A key to learning is repeated exposure, as although the subconscious accepts, it cannot distinguish the difference between positive and negative routines. Repeated exposure of positive experiential learning returns the best results for the individual.

THE EFFECTIVE MODEL FOR IMPROVING WORKPLACE BEHAVIOURS

We believe in offering the teams safety reminders and promote the idea of team members passing them onto each other, each reminder being an exposurefollowed by an action. In a matter of weeks new cultural habits will begin forming. Once teams agree toward giving and receiving reminders then the possibilities for change are unlimited.

SAFETY COACHES

Safety has taken a new turn, as it looks toward psychological and cultural issues. A Safety Coach must not only pass on knowledge but also assist in steering the safety culture; helping others break old associations with safety and at the same time bring with him/her high levels of enthusiasm and influencing skills.

There is a culture in every workplace. People control the cultural inputs and outputs, be this consciously or subconsciously. Culture has more of an impact on

safety than the physical problems. So to understand culture, the Safety Coach needs an understanding of people.

TRAINING SAFETY COACHES THROUGH THE INTERNATIONAL SAFETY COACH ASSOCIATION (ISCA)

Safety coach training through the ISCA is rapidly gaining momentum in all industry sectors, as it continually supports all its members, and offers a powerful tool for developing and sustaining the new culture in the medium and long term.

ISCA safety coaches are ‘the knights amongst the troops’, and continually reinforce the positive messages about behaviours by:

  1. • Understanding the human contribution toward accident causation.

  2. • Having a model for breaking and making habits.

  3. • Continually promoting the safety reminder culture.

  4. • Utilizing positive safety communication tools.

  5. • Cultivating ideas for observing and trending.

  6. • Coaching team members toward pro-activity.

Once qualified through the ISCA training programme, coaches are continually supported and reinforced with positive messages and knowledge, using email, booklets, websites, discussion forums and seminars. ISCA safety coaches become members of a unique and elite team of professionals who are passionate about safety, and dedicated to maintaining a safe working environment for everyone.
